Change Motherboard Serial Number
Once you type vpd -l, this will display the current motherboards information including the motherboards current serial number. Type: vpd -s “serialnumber”=”X” Space after “vpd”, Space after “-s”. The Product S/N will be the Serial Number with the last letter. Make sure the serial number is CAPITAL letters. Usage is pretty straightforward and you simply choose your drive from the drop down box, enter the new serial number and click the Change button. Do note the serial number format as mentioned in the window is made up of 8 hex characters from 0-9 and A-F split by a “-” into two groups of 4. You will then need to reboot to commit the changes.
Every motherboard has a small, built-in black memory chip called a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). The BIOS stores a very basic operating system that allows your computer’s hardware to communicate with the main operating system. You can access the BIOS operating system only while your computer is booting up. In many laptop computers, including ToughBook CF-18 laptops, the BIOS is protected by a passcode, or serial number. Fortunately, in the event that you lose or forget this passcode, you can reset it manually. This is done by removing and replacing the CMOS, a small, watch-like battery attached directly to the motherboard.
